Newborn Photography

When you book a newborn session, it reserves a session in Melissa’s calendar. Your due date will be penciled in and then shortly after you give birth, you would contact Melissa to confirm a session date and time.  All sessions take place with babies under 14 days old, (best around 6-12 days of age) at Melissa’s in-home studio in Farmington, CT for posed and prop work. Lifestyle sessions (documentary/candid) take place in the comfort of your own home (up to 30 minutes outside of Farmington, CT). Please book your newborn session while pregnant. Last minute session inquiries (after baby is born) are not always available.

Why newborn photography?
They will only be newborns once and you want to capture that brief moment in time! Newborns must be photographed within with the very first 2 weeks of life (best around 6 to 12 days old).  At this time, they are very sleepy and tiny and still have that fetal bend and curl that will only last for a few days! Before you know it, your newborn baby will be crawling, then walking and talking.  As a mom of 2 boys, I know first hand how quickly those first few days go by and I am so glad that I have their images to help me remember those early moments.

When should I have my newborn photographed?
As mentioned above, newborns are best photographed within their first 2 weeks of life. At this time, they are very sleepy and curly and they allow me to pose them well.  When they sleep, we can very easily move them into cuddly, precious positions and adorn them with hats and headbands with little to no complaints!

When should I schedule my newborn session?
When you get a positive pregnancy test- no joking. But please at least schedule your newborn session while you are still pregnant. A good time frame would be no later than 25-35 weeks. This way we can “pencil” in a tentative date. Obviously, expected due dates can vary greatly, usually anywhere between 2 weeks early to two weeks late. If you book early enough, I can be sure to clear my schedule within the time frame of your due date. Once you give birth, please call me to let me know you have had the baby, and we will confirm a final date. Trust me, when you get home from the hospital, you will feel overwhelmed. Most likely you won’t get around to finding a photographer until at least after your baby is a month old. At that time, we have missed that “newborn” opportunity. So book early!

Should I book an in-home lifestyle session or an in-studio posed session? read about the differences here

Where will the newborn session take place?
Due to my many props, backdrops and floors, all posed newborn sessions with props are done in my home studio  in Farmington, CT.

If you prefer a more intimate, documentary/candid session, then we can hold a lifestyle session in the comport of your own home.

Will I be included in the photos? What about other members of my family?

Sure! As a new mom once myself, I remember what it feels like those first few weeks home from the hospital. In other words, I did not want to go anywhere near anyone with a camera! But I definitely regret not being in those first few pictures with my son. I encourage all new moms and dads to be a part of the newborn photo session. Older siblings may also be included into your session for more of a family style session. It does depend on what type of session you are booking so just ask!
